One of the most emotionally distressing symptoms of PCOS must be hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia. The cause of this hair loss is due to a higher level of testosterone in the female system (androgen excess).

Androgenic alopecia is caused by nutrient deficiencies and excessive amounts of testosterone in a female hormonal system but, more specifically, the hair thinning/loss is primarily caused by a hormone called DHT, dihydrotestosterone.

DHT is a potent form of testosterone that negatively impacts your hair cycle and follicles. Although it’s a form of testosterone it is different from testosterone in a few important ways.

DHT is produced as a byproduct of testosterone via the 5a-Reductase enzyme, this enzyme converts a percentage of the testosterone in your system into DHT in tissues like the liver, skin, and hair follicles.

In women with PCOS who are susceptible to female pattern baldness, DHT will bind to receptors in your hair follicles and cause them to shrink and weaken by shortening your hair growth cycle.

This hair loss shows as a thinning of density, and loss of hair at the front and top of the scalp. But, unlike in men who suffer complete baldness, females hair will only become thinner and shorter in this area.

The good news is that your hair follicle remains alive, meaning that re-growing the hair is possible.

1️⃣ Firstly, you must treat the underlying root cause - excess testosterone levels. So, ask yourself if you're doing the following;

🤔 Are you ensuring you’re following a good, healthy, nutritious diet?
🤔 Are you limiting your sugar and carb intake to 20-30% of overall calories?
🤔 Are you performing regular exercise (remember the three types of PCOS exercise)
🤔 Are you on top of your stress levels?
🤔 Are you getting enough good quality sleep?

The reason for this is achieving overall hormonal balance is the single most important thing to help reverse hair loss.

2️⃣ Increase Important Hair Growth Nutrients
Iron (ferritin) (10mg/day), Selenium (55mcg/day), Choline (250mg - 500mg/day), Silica (20mg/day), and Zinc (10-30mg/day).

3️⃣ Medication Options
👉 Spironolactone (Aldactone)
A potassium-sparing diuretic used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It’s often prescribed to women with PCOS along with BCP as it works by lowering androgen levels by preventing DHT from binding to your hair follicles.

Minoxidil is a topical lotion or cream that is applied directly to your scalp. It comes in different strengths with the percentage prescribed will be dependant on the extent of your hair thinning.
