Why The Biggest Loser Contestants Put The Weight Back On

Here’s a shocking stat for you. In the first ever series of The Biggest Loser (US version). The top 6 contestants lost a combined 276 kilos. Now, that’s an amazing achievement. 13 years later they caught up with those 6 successful contestants and guess what? They all weighed more than they did before the show!

To me, that’s super upsetting because I know how emotionally impactful being overweight can be. I know it cuts down to your soul and has massive repercussions on your self-worth and confidence. These 6 people aren’t alone though, 98% of people who attempt to lose weight will put the weight back on and even more shocking is that 66% of people will end up even heavier.

 

There are a few reasons for this. They found that in the biggest loser contestants that they had actually done damage to their metabolisms. Yes, even 13 years later their metabolisms never went back to normal.

 

What happens is that you put your metabolism under so much stress trying to lose weight as fast as possible that it fights back to protect your body from what it sees as starvation and danger. So, it lowers your metabolic rate, increases hunger levels, and decreases energy levels. This is an absolute recipe for weight gain, and as with the biggest loser contestants, this may last 13 years!!

 

My advice to you is this, the way to achieve a balanced healthy body is by living a balanced healthy life, enjoy food, eat the occasional takeaway, eat a little chocolate every night, be active, smile, enjoy your social life, eat healthily, move, and enjoy the benefits of being healthy and happy.

My advice to anyone on this program is just to stick with it. Keep going. Don't beat yourself up for a slip-up, pick up and keep going. It gets easier with time. Love yourself always, even when you don't like yourself that much, you can and will do it! Talk to others and don't be afraid to say how you are feeling. For about 2 months the DBF program just kept popping up on my news feed. I kept putting off joining until I saw a picture of myself at my cousin's wedding.  This photo finally got me to sign up and I haven't looked back. Its been so much easier then I thought it would be.

The great thing is my perception of myself has now changed dramatically. I no longer look at myself with self-loathing when I try on clothes. What was once a chore is now something I really enjoy. I have more confidence to go out and mix with other people and the DBF way has just become a part of my lifestyle now.

My whole way of thinking about food has changed and I now make healthier choices without even realizing it and this is the first time on a diet that I have actually changed my way of thinking. I still have my cheat meal every Saturday night and that will continue as this is my new way of eating.
